Why it matters

The paperwork doesn’t stop once you’re rolling.

Four rules every new carrier runs into. Each one is a filing or a deadline we keep track of for you.

  1. No insurance filing, no active authority.

    $750K

Federal minimum liability for most for-hire carriers hauling general freight. FMCSA won’t activate your MC until the filing is on record.

    49 CFR 387.9
  2. Fuel tax isn’t once a year. It’s every quarter.

    4

IFTA returns due every year: Apr 30, Jul 31, Oct 31 and Jan 31. You file even in a quarter you didn’t run.

    IFTA Articles of Agreement
  3. New carriers get checked early.

    12 months

FMCSA runs a new entrant safety audit within your first 12 months. Missing records can fail it and put your registration at risk.

    49 CFR 385.308
  4. Your USDOT number needs updates too.

    2 years

Every carrier must update its MCS-150 every two years, even with no changes. Skip it and the number can be deactivated.

    49 CFR 390.19

Rules summarized for general information. What applies depends on your operation; we confirm it with you before we file.

What’s the difference between a USDOT number and an MC number?

A USDOT number identifies your company to FMCSA for safety tracking. An MC number is the operating authority that lets you haul regulated freight for hire across state lines. Many for-hire carriers need both; we’ll confirm which apply to you.

Do I need IFTA?

IFTA applies to qualified vehicles, generally over 26,000 lbs or with three or more axles, that travel in two or more states or Canadian provinces. It lets you file one quarterly fuel tax report instead of one per state.

Do I need IRP plates?

IRP (apportioned registration) applies to qualifying vehicles that run in more than one state, using similar weight and axle thresholds as IFTA. Registration fees are split between the states by the miles you drive in each.

Do owner-operators need a drug & alcohol program?

Yes. Drivers who need a CDL and perform safety-sensitive work must be in a DOT drug and alcohol testing program. Owner-operators usually join one through a consortium, which we can set up for you.

How long does it take to get my MC authority?

Timing depends on FMCSA, which reviews new applications and requires your insurance filing before your authority becomes active. We file your paperwork right away and keep you updated at every step.

Are government and state fees included in your prices?

No. The prices shown are Jeema service fees. Government and state filing fees vary by state and service and are billed separately. We tell you what they’ll be before we file anything.

What does monthly Safety & Compliance include?

Ongoing help keeping your safety records, driver files and filing deadlines in order, billed per truck each month. Ask us for the full checklist that fits your operation.

Paperwork handled. Back on the road.
